The Woodshop Foreman will lead in all domains of the Wood Fabrication Department (the infrastructure, the people, and the work) through effective planning, organization, and supervision.

This position is expected to display a high degree of personal initiative and must be able to identify and resolve production problems independently with minimal guidance and/or supervision. For problems outside the foreman’s capacity to resolve, timely and effective communication with senior management, Project Managers, and Designers is imperative. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Through appropriate planning and supervision, ensures all aspects of the department including building space, equipment, and supplies/materials are maintained and in good working condition. This position will also continuously develop the department by being at the forefront of digital fabrication research and development.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead day to day operations of the wood fabrication department
  • Provide leadership and on-the-job training to the woodshop fabrication team
  • Delegate work orders, and tasks according to production schedules
  • Set the bar and ensure that work quality is of the “tier one” quality at all times
  • Be involved with short-term and long-term planning of the department including space and equipment.
  • Be involved with short-term and long-term planning and management of space requirements
  • Be at the forefront of department research and development including new technologies, machinery research, material testing, and prototyping
  • Coordinates access to the facilities after hours; makes arrangements for work done outside of regular business hours and ensures that work is carried out safely and in accordance with Company policies and applicable government legislation
  • Review and approve both submittal and production drawings for following: Construction, efficiency, overall dimensions, cost, material sizes, build accessibility, ease of installation, CNC requirements, Information required by production
  • In partnership with the Joint Health & Safety Committee, assist with inspections of the Wood Fabrication facility/facilities.
  • Continuously anticipate tools/equipment needed to successfully complete all projects moving through digital fabrication
  • Be responsible for the maintenance and care of all Company-owned department machines and troubleshoot equipment as necessary;
  • In conjunction with management, identify, establish, and maintain a Raw Material Inventory and consumable hardware required for department use. Prepare Monthly RMU vs RMI reports and produce PO requests to maintain min stock requirements.
  • Inventory all project materials received and stored within the wood fabrication department.
  • Prepares inventory of surplus supplies at the end of each project, and in collaboration with the PM, identifies which items need to be retained for the warranty period, what can be disposed/ recycled and what can be returned unused. Maintains an up to date inventory of surplus items for use in other projects.

The Woodshop Foreman sets the tone and pace of the environment by promoting the cooperation and commitment of all department personnel, enabling all members of the group to work cooperatively and productively.

Oversee department schedules and adding department shifts as needed, to meet production requirements Identify developmental and training needs of department staff and the appropriate resources required for training.

In coordination with HR, ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) as well as with Astound’s, Inc.’s Health and Safety Policies

Promptly report incidents, accidents and/or safety concerns to the JHSC and Production Manager.

 

TIME AND ATTENDANCE

  • Ensures department staff follow time and attendance procedures
  • Ensure department time sheets are properly managed and completed in a timely manner.
  • Approves vacation and leave requests and ensures such leaves do not interfere with production schedules

 

The Woodshop Foreman Understands and takes ownership of all aspects involved with a project regardless of magnitude and pays strict attention to quality control, timing, and efficiency. Ensures all resources necessary for successful completion of projects are identified early and supplied in a timely manner to avoid delays and substandard quality. Proactively seeks out clarification/information from Project Managers and Designers where instructions are vague. Suggests improvements in approach and methods where appropriate.

 

  • Set production goals with Senior Management and reports progress to appropriate parties on a daily basis
  • Provide Operations and Production input on performance reviews of woodshop team members
  • Support Operations and Production and other coordinate with department Foremen
  • Be actively involved in all project hand-off meetings that involve the millwork fabrication department
  • Act as the liaison between design and the wood shop department;
  • Be hands-on with fabrication as needed; ensure all fabrication is done to a high-quality standard and in good timing;
  • Manage material inventory to coincide with production cue;
  • Maintain a safe work environment by performing work in accordance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act as well as with the Company’s Health & Safety Policy;
  • Report any workplace hazards to management.

  • Must have the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulation or government law
